Massive. Immense. Vast. Unyielding. Intimidating. Isolating. Even when I was in the desert in Egypt, I did not feel as overwhelmed and unanchored as I did here in Utah.

Moab, in eastern Utah, houses both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, both still glorious areas of pristine wilderness. The landscape is never-ending, and unforgiving. Stark, yet stunning.

And even though it encompasses the very heart of what I seek to convey in my work (human insignificance in the face of time and Mother Nature), I found it almost impossible to capture the essence of this imposing landscape. There is no way to do Utah justice on the first go-round. Since I didn't seem to be able to shoot "big", I resorted to small bites.

I do not like to be bested by my landscapes. I may come back someday, but I think it will take me a while to recover from this one.
